We tend to see a lot of young boaters out on the water using a wide variety of watercraft. In the state of Kentucky, it is required that any young boater between the ages of 12-17 have their boating license if they intend on operating a watercraft by themselves. This includes any watercraft that can exceed 10 mph.
This is an invaluable course to young boaters and can be done completely online! We strongly support and recommend this course as it gives young boaters the information, they need to make smart decisions while on the water. The best part is that you don't have to be a Kentucky resident to take the course, all young boaters can get certified through this. Click the picture to get started!
Sunscreen is a necessity. Skin Cancer is scary and, yes, it does kill. There are a myriad of products out there and it can be confusing. But it is so important to apply and re-apply often to get the best protection. If you are unsure about what SPF is right for you, check with your physician or other medical advisor. Let's get those kids slathered up too and teach them a good habit when enjoying the sun. Remember to protect your eyes as well and break out those shades!
It is a great escape to be on the water and enjoy time with friends and family; but we all must be aware of the inherent dangers that can, and for many, do occur.
One simple thing to check off the list for safety is to have a life jacket on board for EVERY person.
There are a few Coast Guard regulations to follow:
*The life jacket MUST be Coast Guard approved.
*The life jacket must be the proper size for the person meant to wear it.
*The life jacket MUST be in good condition.
*It's a great rule of thumb for the life jacket to be worn at all times when on the water, but if not worn, it must be easily accessible.
It is important for children to wear a life jacket at all times in and around water. You can never start too early teaching children to have a healthy respect for the power of the water.
Also, be aware that there are life jackets designed for:
*Different ages
*Different sizes
*Swimmer or Non-swimmer
*Men, Women, Children, and pets
*Activity (paddling, fishing, skiing, etc.)
Check out the U.S. Coast Guard website or your state boating authority for regulations you need to follow.
